about

Do we need to go to Mars?

There are barren, hostile, remote parts of Earth that would be difficult for any human to survive in for long. Though compared to Mars they would seem like paradise. There are people starving and suffering from disease, homelessness and absolute poverty and that is just in the affluent countries, let alone the war torn countries decimated by corrupt governments, dictators and extremists. Yet instead of solving these problems the richest countries in the world choose to spend billions on explorative mission to a distant rock.

At the rate we are devouring the resources of our home planet it would still take billions of years for us to reduce Earth to a heap of dust and rock and destroy the eco system to such an extent that our birth place became uninhabitable but it would still be better than Mars. If we put our minds together and joined forces as countries and set aside differing religions, philosophies and political ideals surely we could preserve our planet and create lasting peace?

Yeah right! When has there ever been a time when man has not been at war with his neighbour. Solving the world’s problems is as much a colossal task as settling life on Mars. There are plenty well meaning people on Earth that wish for peace and contribute in their own small way but there are just as many nutcases that can never be reasoned with. So who decides who is on the right side and even what the right side is? In any war both sides believe they are fighting the noble cause. Like war, it is a futile argument, like a computer playing itself at Tic Tac Toe, like science versus religion, each side arguing there case but never convincing the other. That stubbornness is deep rooted in us all and it is in some ways what drives and motivates us to reach for goals, be it money, respect, happiness, whatever…it’s the very thing that makes us human, free will.

Sci-fi is escapism and a way to express ideas. For me it’s about stimulating the imagination rather than collecting comic books and toys and going to conventions

If we cant solve the problems here do we think we can build a civilisation from scratch on some remote dusty planet where the inevitable human frailties will resurface and instigate our ultimate demise.

Humans’ need food, shelter, human contact, sexual satisfaction and some hobbies. But as soon as someone tries to take any or all of these things away from us or restrict us in some way then our base instincts of survival kick in and its fight or flight.
